I want to be a DJ...where can I buy equipment and what advice do you have?

I would like to be a part time DJ (during weekends or events). What is some quality equipment I should buy that is not too expensive but still gets the job done? Any other tips for someone just starting out?

Bonus question: Any awesome websites for beginner DJ's are much appreciated :)

You can look for equipment online, but in my opinion, you want to find out where you can go touch it. Radio Shack isn't the top of the line, but they do contract the builds out to major manufacturers, so it is typically usable. Don't worry about stereo, as you can't hear the separation in a hall or barroom anyway. The feel of your gear will be important to you. Try not to fall into too many hackey traps. If you're going to do weddings, try to remember that there are no do-overs. If you are not on your game, it could seriously screw up a couple's day. I'm not trying to create pressure for you, just telling it how it is. Weddings are generally very happy occasions and are quite fun to be involved with. Don't be afraid to pick up the mic and say what needs to be said. You have to have the authority to command a crowd and sound cool doing it, so practice. Practice talking up a record... That means talking over the intro right up to the start of the lyric without stepping on it. Practice things that you will have to say. Practice saying those things while running all of your gear, holding a hand up so that Uncle Irving knows that you need a minute before you can listen to him and not missing the mark to start that next song... Then go do it and have fun!!!!

Thanks for the great answer!

What have you heard about Guitar Center for buying DJ equipment?

What are the basic DJing equipment I should buy so I can do a show?

I appreciate it :)

More and more DJ's these days are going fully digital, no records or giant turntables, just a computer and small DJ board. Mixxx and Ultramixer are two pieces of software that'll let you do it all digitally. This way you don't need as expensive equipment and digital mp3's are easier to manage/swap out on the fly than physical records. You could order these smaller boards online.

Normal DJ guides should apply to digital DJ'ing as well, at least the actual mixing parts of the guides.

I would also suggest that you rent the equipment for your first few gigs. Sure, you'll make less (if anything), but you'll get to try out the equipment before investing in it.

What are the "bare and bones" things I must get to DJ?

Right now I have absolutely nothing, I'm not sure what things I need to buy.

The first page of the guide on the djvibe page I linked, says that what you need to start would be
2 x Turntables
2 x SlipMats
2 x Cartridges and Needles for the Turntables (normally included)
1 x Mixer
1 x Pair of Headphones
Something to amplify the signal (Stereo, Amplifier + Speakers etc.)

They also go more into detail about what you'd need from each piece of equipment.
