Have you looked through the Dancecult.net resources? It's an electronic dance music research network, all sorts of resources and people. If you go to their journal you might be able to send a mail to ask for their best research sites. It's a peer review mag and should help

At this site B.E Journal of Economic Analysis and Policy to see the full article I had to give them my email address but I did find an economics paper called "File Sharing and International Sales of Music: An empirical analysis with a panel of Countries" by Alejandro Zentner.
Has a lot of empirical data but was published in 2005 so a little old. Goes into the change of music and composition.

side note this number includes electronic pop music as well, if it does not fit into the pop-rock category it usually ends up in electronic even if it is not strictly electronic so the real number for purely electronica would be much less than 7.1 %
I would have thought pop music would have made the number larger but seeing as rock is number one in market share with over 30 % it makes sense.

Sales of music via the internet and mobile phones proliferated and spread across the world in 2005, generating sales of US$1.1 billion for record companies - up from US$380 million the previous year 2004, with promising further significant growth in the coming year.
The mobile phone became a portable music device in 2005, the first year in which song downloads to mobile phones spread internationally. Mobile music now accounts for approximately 40% of record company digital revenues, which account for the bulk of their US$400 million-plus mobile music revenues. So In 2005 Digital music now accounted for about 6% of record companies' revenues, up from practically zero two years ago.
With 420 million single tracks downloaded in 2005 globally more than double the number downloaded in 2004 (156 million), We should see steady growth over the next three years. In 2006 we saw even bigger growth, with the total infringing music files down 20% on the 1.1 billion peak in April 2003, helping increase the Digital Market Share. It all started in 2005.
The End of 2006 Brought Digital music sales that were estimated to double, to around US$2 billion. Digital sales now account for around 10% of the music market as record companies experiment and innovate with an array of business models and digital music products, involving hundreds of licensing partners. The trend is growing, with more growth into 2007 and 2008.
In 2007 was the year ISP responsibility started to become an accepted principle. 2008 must be the year it becomes reality. Companies continued their transition into a digital business in 2007. Music sales via online and mobile channels have risen from 10% to an estimated US$2.9 billion, 15 % of Market Share. Yet the spread of unlicensed music on ISP networks is choking revenues to companies and investment in artists, despite a healthy increase in digital sales in 2007, unlicensed downlaods up approximately 40% on the previous year.
The Year of 2008 Was supossed to be the gravy year. But with 95% of music downloads are unauthorised, with no payment to artists and producers, so market share staggered. While Global digital music sales grow as music industry develops new business models, such as youtube and itunes. The end of 2008 we saw Digital Music Sales Grow to US$3.7 billion and 25% Market Share.
With this Steady Growth over the Last five we can assume we will see a 35% Market Share by the End of 2009. It suffers from illegal Downloads. If they put more stress on Internet Service Providers to track downloads, this could increase to 50% market share by 2011.
Hope this Gives you the history, and Problems Digital Dance Music Industry Faces.

How much market share does electronic dance music have globally?
I am trying to figure out the market share that electronic dance music has globally. EDM consists of tons of genres, mainly, dance, electronica, trance, house, techno, drum and base etc.. I am look for an aggregate number and/or breakdown by region. Region could be continents and/or countries.
Percentages would be alright. Although actual sales volumes globally/regional is what I am looking for.
Thank you :)

breakdown of electronic music sales for major record labels (keep in mind this does not take into account small indy labels or direct to consukmer sales by musicians) 7.1% I could not find any actual dollar numbers, I found a site talking about how this number gets very complicated due to the daily change of exhachange rates so the standard is to talk in percentages. side note this number includes electronic pop music as well, if it does not fit into the pop-rock category it usually ends up in electronic even if it is not strictly electronic so the real number for purely electronica would be much less than 7.1 %
