If you want the best way to learn any instrument you really should consider taking lessons. For guitar check with the local music stores and colleges and try to find someone with good references and someone who teaches theory along with performance technique. You need to learn how music works, not just what your hands do. Taking lessons will save you a ton of time in learning technique. Most of us when we try something new fall short of doing it right. Think of the first time you swung a golf club, the first time you tried to type, the first time you tried to ski. You have to learn the basics, before you can really jam and you need to learn them right. I still have tendinitis that seriously hampered my playing because my early teachers did not know how I should grip a drum stick and I've seen tons of self taught musicians who are making the same mistakes I did early on. At best you just won't play as well as you could have, at worst you can physically hurt yourself. Learn the basics and then branch off on your own. Learning the basics won't put you in a box creatively, but not knowing how to play right will. So if you want to learn to play well, drop the self help and get a teacher. You'll be glad you did.

This guy is really good, and he posts really good instructional videos. He also has a youtube channel with dozens of videos. He'll get you through the basics. I think you'll love him.
I also recommend getting a music book with tabs. My recommendation is the "Acoustic Guitar Bible", ISBN 0634019554. They have good songs written in their original form.

you are far more well served by looking guitar tutorials on youtube, vimeo or other video tutorial type sites.
first you need to figure out what kind of player you want to be:
do you want to basically just play in first hand position? by this, i mean, do you want to play 'up the neck' or learn how to use a capo, or change keys or learn about music theory and scales and so on - or do you simply want to learn some basic chords and start strumming 3 and 4 chord versions of basic songs?
if you want to do something simple, just learn 'tab' - it's the opposite of standard notation and is like the 'visual quickstart' for guitar (acoustic or electric)
there is a 'dummies' book for guitar - get it! it's awesome for learning all of hte basics
and when you're ready, hit songsterr and try playing along and do the same on youtube with slow speed tutorials (songsterr lets you manipulate tempo)
at any rate, you've really got to elaborate: do you want to just learn some basic chords and get to play 'wish you were here' and some simple beatles stuff within 6 to 12 months, or do you want to learn how to really play and pick up zeppelin quality songs (or radiohead and so on)
