How can I find out if a song is in the public domain?

I am thinking of recording an album of Christmas music. What is the easiest/best way for me to determine which Holiday songs are in the public domain so I don't have to worry about copyright issues?

First, learn all you can about copyright, it is good to know all the facts before beginning. Second, you can research songs at this site: http://www.pdinfo.com/index.php to find out if they are public domain or not. Third, Wikipedia has a great primer on public domain here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain

The Public Domain Information Project has a complete list of songs that are in the public domain and that are royalty free. You can search songs or browse from a list. Anything published in 1922 or before is already there. So, if you're doing "My Darling Clementine," you're probably fine.
