Okay, by essential you mean influential.
1. Beatles.
2. The Crickets - Buddy Holly's band, set the tone for Rock and Roll.
3. Louis Armstrong's Hot Five - Louis's first recording band, later expanded to the hot seven.
4. Glenn Miller's Orchestra - amazing and so ahead of its time.
5. Miles Davis's Quintet - he had two. I mean the second - when Chick Corea replaces Herbie Hancock playing with Miles, you know you have pure genius at work.
Plenty of Beatles videos out there. Here are some for the other musicians.

The 20th Century lasted from 1901 to 2000. It's pretty sad that so many answers are from just a few years in one style. The ones I selected are all from the 20th Century and cover small band traditional jazz, large band traditional jazz, pop music from the first third of the century played in the last third, and a remarkable all-saxophone band.

Bob Dylan & The Band - The Band was with Bob Dylan when he completely converted from folk to rock. Bob Dylan could've never made such great music alone; if he didn't have The Band, who would've played trombone on "Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35"?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/aa/Bob_Dylan_and_The_Band_-_1974.jpg
Pink Floyd - Again, they made some of the greatest music of the twentieth century. You'll never be the same again after hearing Dark Side of the Moon.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra - They were one of the most popular bands to play swing music which would eventually lead to the popularization of jazz which leads to blues which leads to rock and roll. (I should really make a flowchart out of this.) Anyway, besides the fact that they made some great music (their "Chatanooga Choo Choo" was the first song to earn the status of gold record), they were very influential.

Simon & Garfunkel - Simon & Garfunkel is the only folk band that I can listen to. The rest are rubbish. I can't think of any folk singer/band that stands up to Simon & Garfunkel.

Five most essential bands of the 20th Century?
Not necessarily the best, most famous, most popular or most successful.
The ones you personally would keep if the rest were going to be lost forever, and you could only keep five.
I'm hoping I'll discover something interesting!
Bands should be two or more people, in any genre.

I didn't mean "most influential". As I said in the question I meant the ones you personally would keep, if you the works of all the rest were going to be lost forever. However, a good answer, and thanks for including some vids.

I'm assuming all of these bands still existed, and keeping them in their prime forever. http://albumarchive.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/md_7.jpg

I was thinking more of keeping their work than keeping the members eternally young. My wording was on the informal side I admit. :)
But good answer. I thought more people would post links, and give at least a line or two of explanation.

Oh yes, I wasn't talking about eternal youth. I just meant that a lot of bands (including some of the ones I had mentioned) have changed their sound over the years. I loved U2 in their Joshua Tree era, and I would like to keep that sound forever. Same with Dave Matthews with that album. And Blink 182 no longer exists, I think. Guns 'n Roses in the 80s and early 90s was amazing. They're just weird now.

Nice to see a bigger range. I was hoping to get some a wider range of answers by asking about the entire 20th century.
