There have been some good albums this year. Here are my favorites:

  1. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (not as good as their last, but still awesome)
  2. Andrew Bird - Noble Beast (chill music, whistling)
  3. Jack Johnson - En Concert (live album, predictably good)
  4. Vetiver - Tight Knit (very catchy. Indie but still awesome)
  5. The Union Line - The Union Line (two great songs: strangers and pearls)
  6. The XX - XX (very indie but good)
  7. Flight of the Conchords - I Told You I Was Freaky (more funny stuff from the NewZ duo)
  8. Sparklehorse - Dark Night of The Soul (Dangermouse-ish)

Bruce Springsteen - Working on a dream
Rolling Stone (p.66) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Springsteen has mastered the key sounds of rock's golden age, and he deploys them at will on this album, diving deep into influences that he's only hinted at before on record."

Not in any particular order, but these were the top albums for me this year:

Phoenix - "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix"
Grizzly Bear "Veckatimest"
Pearl Jam "Backspacer"
Alice In Chains "Black Gives Way To Blue"
Chickenfoot "Chickenfoot"

These get played over and over and I never tire of them.

One coming out in a couple of weeks that should be a great album is from Them Crooked Vultures. Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters, John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin and Jose Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age.

Honorable Mention:
If you like a harder metal sound, the latest release from Papa Roach "Metamorphosis" is really good.

Groan... I don't listen to "albums" per se...

I assemble play-lists which I let loop until I've got them memed into my brain like ear-worms and can play them back in my mind with new tracks of my own composition added, whereupon I build another list and do it again, but technically, they could be described as "custom albums", and for the last couple weeks it's been this:

--------------------------- week 3-4 Oct 2009 ------------------------------------------
i -
http://tunes.digitalock.com/mahalo/jiraiya.mp3
ii -
http://tunes.digitalock.com/mahalo/Damien_Robitaille-Metres_De_Mon_Etre.mp3
iii -
http://tunes.digitalock.com/mahalo/overtherainbo.mp3
iv -
http://tunes.digitalock.com/mahalo/OtisTaylorNastyLetter.mp3
v -
http://tunes.digitalock.com/mahalo/Will.I.Am-AlexOnTheSpot.mp3
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want more I can go back and post the play lists I put together for each 2-3 week period through 2009.

There are a lot of popular albums this year but the only album I found myself able to listen to over and over again was Bob Dylan's newest album, Together Through Life. This man continues to produce truly original music, just a beautiful album, he is like a vintage wine, this album may have been overlooked by many but the critics all seem to have loved it. Kind of has a little Cajun flare mixed with folk and country

Here are my favorites:

If you're at all into rap, Eminem-Relapse brings a breathe of fresh air into a genre where it seems like every song sounds the same. Strongly recommended.

I was also really impressed by Paramore's latest CD brand-new-eyes-paramore. It leans more to rock than to pop, which I think is a good thing. Great combination of fast songs, as well as a few slower ones.

Paper Route release their first LP this year, and their music sounds like no other contemporary group. Rolling Stone describes their music as "Melodic, emotional synth-rock that pulses with an ambient undercurrent reminiscent of vintage Boards of Canada or Aphex Twin."
http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/04/29/breaking-paper-route/

If you're into pop, try out Weezer's new album "Raditude." It just came out this Tuesday, and it's got some really catchy songs! Truly a fun album.

The latest Kings of Leon album has been universally raved about. It's called "Only By The Night."

Muse's latest album, The Resistance, I've also heard great things about.

I'm going to have to say:

1. Black Eyed Peas - The End
2. Lady Gaga - Paparazzi
3. Pink - Funhouse
4. LMFAO - Party Rock
5. Beyonce - I Am... Sasha Fierce

The reason for these is the fact that there was multiple chart topping songs that I loved from all of these guys. I work in an entertainment complex and noticed songs from all these albums constantly playing! They are simply musical geniuses.

This would be my "mostly mainstream" best of the year list (so far), keeping in mind that there are still a few interesting albums coming out in the next month. As I'm Canadian, there are definitely a couple of bands/artists you may not know of, and I highly recommend checking them out.

k-os - Yes!
One of Canada's best hip-hop artists.
Notable tracks: "4 3 2 1" and "I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman"

Muse - The Resistance
Easily one of my all-time favorite rock/alternative bands.
Notable tracks: "Uprising", "Unnatural Selection" and "Guiding Light"

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
A solid indie-rock album with serious synth-pop standards.
Notable tracks: "1901", "Lisztomania" and "Armistice"

Dinosaur Jr - Farm
The band that left their mark on the late 80s and early 90s return with a solid, absolutely powerful return-to-form.
Notable tracks:
"I Want You to Know", "Over It" and "Ocean in the Way"

Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown
The phenomenal eighth album from one of alternative rock's best bands.
Notable tracks: "Before the Lobotomy", "Peacemaker" and "21st Century Breakdown"

Emm Gryner - Goddess
Powerful folk-pop from a great indie Canadian singer/songwriter.
Notable tracks: "Young as the Night", "Leftover Love" and "Goddess"

The Tragically Hip - We Are The Same
Canada's long-standing, mind-blowingly awesome, rock ensemble.
Notable tracks: "Love Is a First", "Country Day" and "The Last Recluse"

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
New York's synthrock champions, with their third dance-inspired album.
Notable tracks: "Zero", "Heads Will Roll" and "Shame and Fortune"

Wilco - Wilco (The Album)
Rootsy pop-rock from a seminal American alternative band.
Notable tracks: "You Never Know", "You and I" and "Wilco (The Song)"

Metric - Fantasies
Yet another example of Canada's powerhouse of music talent, Metric's fourth album is nothing short of genius.
Notable tracks: "Help I'm Alive", "Sick Muse" and "Gimme Sympathy"

Honourable Mention:
Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted
A gutsy pop album that deserves loads of respect, and is well worth a few listens.
Notable tracks: "My Life Would Suck Without You", "I Do Not Hook Up" and "Long Shot"
