Yes - they can improv, rarely need sheet music, and are used to communicating with minimal fuss. Jazz musicians can usually play rock quite well, and technically they are on par with anyone. Some of the greatest hip hop and R&B songs heavily sample jazz tracks, so jazz musicians are definitely the best choice if you need people to play anything. They also tend to be laid-back personalities who like to go with the flow (except for the odd diva/o but that's true of every musical genre).

some musicians can work fast and some can play it anyway you want, but being able to do both is what makes a great studio musician.

Do Jazz musicians make the best all round studio musicians?
It seems like they can play any style. They know how to interact, how to be simple or complex. And the know how to improvise and listen to each other. Herbie Hancocks album of Joni Mitchell tunes was incredible.

studio musicians need to be very flexible to play in any style which the producer needs. they also should be able to work very quickly. some musicians can work fast and some can play it anyway you want, but being able to do both is what makes a great studio musician.

Yes--because if they're jazz players they can play any form of popular music due to the fact that most modern music was derived from jazz & blues. Also, they are usually able to play by ear AND improvise quickly which is extremely helpful in the recording studio.
