Yamaha makes some excellent beginning-priced basses. I would put them above those introductory basses from Ibanez as more versatile, although many of the cheapest Yamaha basses look quite a bit like their Fender counterparts, something deemed "not cool" by many.
The RBX170 is a great beginner bass, with standard P-Bass style pickups plus the addition of a bridge pickup.
Below are links to Yamaha's official website for their bass guitar offerings, as well as Musician's Friend's listings of Yamaha basses. That said, when buying any bass try it first in person at Guitar Center or another music store.
Especially with cheap instruments, quality control is not too good.
If you can afford it, a Fender Jazz Bass is considered by many the most versatile bass in the low-mid end of the price spectrum. Just something else to consider.

I would suggest an Ibanez, such as the one I linked to at the bottom. Fenders tend to have a lot of frets that buzz and things like that from what I have found (at least the cheapo ones). I got an Ibanez for my first bass and it was great, it worked out for gigs and everything! Good luck!

I agree with and1. I bought my son an Ibanez for about $300 and he's still using it in college. He played it in a worship band at church and has now "expanded" to punk.
