It sounds like a pretty close case. I think that so many songs today contain little pieces of one another. There is so little originality anymore. It does seem Coldplay took pieces of Stevens song but Joe Satriani did first though. Satriani's is closer but both are kinda disturbing. I was a Satriani fan, and when I first heard Viva la Vida, it bugged me pretty bad. Then, my hubby got me some Cat Stevens because I was going through a folky period. Some may argue that it's just chord progression, but I feel like the melody here is definitely being copied. Perhaps someone has some kind of audio photographic memory and can't remember that there was already a song. It may not be something malicious. Remember, Cat already found someone "borrowing" Father and Son and got an award out of it.
