You can't listen without a codec.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Sony_ATRAC3_Audio_Codec.htm
That site tells you how to install the codec.
If this file is non-DRM (no protection), then you can use this to actually convert it to MP3:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=2971&SMB=YES
Also, this is the software that actually plays the files:
http://www.download.com/Sony-Connect-SonicStage-/3000-2141_4-10375164.html
That is Sony's official software.
So those are your options. I personally would try to use the MP3 conversion tool. If that doesn't work, then use Sonic Stage. The only reason I don't recommend the codec is that it might not work correctly, or it might be a bit more complicated than the other two options.

Yep. You need to install a codec for it, which is independent of the program being used. Here are a couple of options:

Sorry to say, but you cannot play these files in WMP11 as they are of a sony proprietary format. Instead, try real player or winamp.

You may or may not be able to play Sony .atp files in Windows Media Player, but why not be sure and download ATP Player. The reviews for the player seem really good so I would advise downloading this and let it play your .atp files because you know for sure they will play. The link is attached in the sources.

Ever run across a video on the internet that didn't play? It's the same concept. Once you get the right CODEC, the media player just uses the CODEC to decode the file and play it. Most people have installed ffdshow, DivX, Xvid, or something like the K-lite CODEC pack on their computers so they can play videos.
