The purpose of a bridge in a musical composition is to create anticipation, to build tension or to set up the next part of the song.

A song usually follows the verse-chorus/verse-chorus form that can make the listener loose interest in the song pretty quickly. Hence the songwriter inducts a bridge to break away from the monotony of the set pattern and inject some excitement into the song.
When it comes to writing pop/rock songs, songwriters usually place the bridge right before the instrumental solo/break. The bridge is a pathway that leads the song to a new level with the aim of bringing it smoothly back to the chorus.

Answer from wikipedia:
In music, especially occidental popular music, a bridge is a contrasting section which also prepares for the return of the original material section.
In lyrical songs, you have your chorus, then a verse, then a bridge, then you go back to the chorus.
Justin Timberlake gives you a nice example of this in Sexy Back. He labels them for easy use!
I'm bringing sexy back (yeah)
The mother f--kers don't know how to act (yeah)
Come let me make up for the things you lack (yeah)
'Cause you're burning up I gotta get it fast (yeah)
Take 'em to the bridge
Dirty babe (uh-huh)
You see the shackles
Baby I'm your slave (uh–huh)
I'll let you whip me if I misbehave (uh–huh)
It's just that no one makes me feel this way (uh-huh)
Take 'em to the chorus
Come here girl
Go ahead, be gone with it
Come to the back
Go ahead, be gone with it
VIP
Go ahead, be gone with it
Drinks on me
Go ahead, be gone with it
Let me see what you're working with
