1. Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.

2. Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain-this is good. Wait until the battery is empty and the screen goes black. If the battery was fully charged, this might take a couple of hours.

3. Wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 (that’s 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time).

4. Connect your Zune to either a USB port on the back or your computer or to AC power using the Zune AC Adapter and let it charge.

Once the battery has sufficient power, the player should start normally. No other action is required.

I have the original version of the Zune and since I've had it, I occasionally have it freeze up on me. Usually flicking the top 'lock' key back and forth a few times will get it unfrozen, but a couple times I've had to completely restart it.

If you have to do that, all you need to do is hold the 'Back' button and the 'Up' button at the same time for three or four seconds. Here's an official Microsoft tutorial: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946064

I do not have a Zune but I guess there has been a problem with the 30 gig HDD models freezing up. Here is a link to gizmodo stating that it has been a widespread problem.

Microsoft hasnt released anything on this as of yet but im sure something will pop up sooner rather than later.

I just read about this on ars technica. A buddy of mine sold his 30g zune a couple weeks ago, he's feeling pretty good about it right now.

As far as fixing it microsoft hasn't commented yet, but I think it is reasonable to assume you'll get some kind of compensation for this public relations nightmare, microsoft has enough angry customers without this.

this just in:
gizmodo posted a guide to getting zunes running again. as the article says, it might not play nice with microsoft's fix when they finally get around to it, and it might void your warranty, but if you can't wait to get your zune working again it looks like this is your best bet. good luck.
