If your computer's sound card has an optical audio or a digital coaxial output that would be the easiest way to connect them. You can pick up an optical cable for cheap from your corner electronics store, or use a regular rca cable for using digital coaxial.
However, If you do not have an optical audio or digital coaxial output, you have two other options. You could (1) purchase a new internal sound card that has optical or digital coax, or (2) just connect your computer to your surround sound system with a "headphone" to "RCA" cable. Chances are that the surround sound system may be able to try and change the stereo sound into 5.1.
So. To summarize:
Best: Digital Coax / Optical
Good: "Headphone" to "RCA" (Also known as 1/8th inch to RCA)

You could use a 5.1 sound card like those available from Creative Labs but it may be a lot easier and more convenient to use a USB device that you can use in any computer. You could try the USB 5.1 channel adapter from GWC Technologies, which costs US$34.99 in Amazon.com.
