Once you have it connected to your new computer find your music files (usually under the iTunes folder in your My Music folder).

If you old hard drive does is not accessible due to hard drive corruption... try using this product: http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

" Recover even when Windows doesn't recognize the drive-

GetDataBack can even recover your data when the drive is no longer recognized by Windows. It can likewise be used even if all directory information - not just the root directory- is missing. "

Once you have completed accessing your data and it fully copied on to you new computer, log in to iTunes and do a search for your music (i.e. File | Add Folder to Library). Double click on one of the songs to authorize the new computer to the old song. You may have to authorize all of you songs to the new computer.

Another solution is to re-download all of the songs/videos from iTunes again. You get to download your songs and videos once: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/lostmusic/

If you have an iPod or iPhone with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to move your purchases to other authorized computers. You might want to do this if you regularly use more than one computer (at home and at work or school, for example) to buy items from the iTunes Store, and you want all your purchases in both iTunes libraries.

To move store purchases from your iPod or iPhone:
Make sure the iPod or iPhone has the purchased items you want to transfer.

Make sure the destination computer (the one you want to transfer items to) is authorized to play iTunes Store purchases (choose Store > Authorize Computer and then click Authorize).

Connect your iPod or iPhone to the destination computer.

Do one of the following:

If the iPod or iPhone is synced with another computer, or is an iPod shuffle: Click Transfer Purchases in the dialog that appears.

If the iPod or iPhone is set up to manually manage items: Wait for the device to appear in the iTunes window (below Devices), and then choose File > Transfer Purchases From iPod (or iPhone).

Unless the song is an iTunes Plus version, you can play an iTunes Store purchase on up to five authorized computers.

It'll be easiest if you have a Mac. You can use the "Target Disk Mode". (see link below)

If you have a PC, you'll have to buy an external hard drive enclosure so you can access your data.

Statistically speaking he probably got a new macbook (if he got a mac at all) which does not have firewire and so can't do target disk mode.

Statistically speaking he got a new macbook? While macbooks might be a popular single notebook model, statistically speaking, he's probably running Windows Vista. Total sales of all Windows-based laptops is much greater than Apple models

Your best solution is to buy an external enclosure for your old laptop's hard drive. This will not only enable you to transfer any files you want, but have an external hard drive for backups.

Depending on the model of your laptop you need to get an enclosure for 2.5" IDE or 2.5" SATA. If the dead laptop is older it likely uses IDE. Just keep this in mind while browsing my favorite computer parts store linked to in the sources.

There are many great programs for both Mac and PC that allow you to transfer songs from your iPod back to your computer. Senuti is my favorite option for Mac. It's well worth the $18. CopyTrans is a very nice program for PC users.
