Later in Godfather I, Don Corleone tells Michael that Sonny, by then dead, was a "bad don." Sonny gets points for beating the crap out of Carlo Rizzi (Connie's husband) all over the street. Too bad it was a setup.
Michael almost managed to get the family legal, which would make him a better businessman, but less a mafia don than his father. Michael loses points because he got punched by the NYPD Capt. McCluskey in front of Solozzo, so he loses face there. He also freaked out looking for the gun hidden in the bathroom.
Vincent was barely shown as Don in part III. Bonus points for chewing Joey Zasa'a ear off. He also did not skip a beat to trade off his love for taking over the family business.
That leaves Vito. Plus he was the first :-)

• I think Vito in his prime was definitely the best "Don".
But they all have their flaws, near the end of his life Don Vito did allow himself to get shot, not to mention he got Luca Brasi killed by sending him out on an obvious "feel them out" meeting with Virgil Solozzo.
