Try Solaris, either the Tarkovsky original or the Soderbergh remake. It's pretty heady. If you want even more cerebral, try Tarkovsky's Stalker. It'll twist your brain (they even based a video game on it!)

I'd go for the Tarkovsky "Solaris" over the Soderbergh. Soderbergh's version isn't bad, per se, but it feels a bit more on the nose. The icy remove that makes the original so involving and other-worldly feels like more of a pretense in the remake. And I think George Clooney is under-playing to the point of getting lost. He's not being subtle; he's just not really bothering to act. "Stalker" is also highly weird and brilliant.

You may have seen it, but "Children of Men" is my favorite sci-fi film in recent memory. I also think Spielberg's "Minority Report" from a few years back is seriously underrated. Great action, cool effects, interesting social commentary about the pervasiveness of modern advertising and a surprisingly grim view of humanity's potential from the guy who made "ET" and "Close Encounters."

Oh, and Linklater's "Scanner Darkly" is quite thought-provoking, beautifully animated and super-trippy. "Donnie Darko" also brilliantly toes the line between comedy, sci-fi, horror and coming-of-age drama. "Dark City" is just a brilliant film, picking up future noir where "Blade Runner" left off. Like "The Matrix," only better.

If you'd like something older, Godard's "Alphaville" is one of my favorites.
