Was he a member of the Academy? I do not think it was a snub as he was a comedian not an actor. He appeared in limited rolls in a few movies but still he was a comedian so again,, not a snub. He was an amazing talent though, a pioneer to many of top comedians today.

I personally don't think so, as the Academy Awards is reserved for films, and Carlin was most assuredly not known for his screen appearances. If everyone in the entertainment industry were to be on that list, it would be two hours long by itself.

For example, Jeff Healey died last year, along with Bo Diddley, Isaac Hayes and more. The entertainment genre is just too large to be all-encompassing.

I'm sure that was the justification for omitting him from the montage, however, as the telecast this year was so dedicated to the medium of film in general I think he should have been included. Many of the telecast's montages and retrospectives included clips from Mamma Mia and Pineapple Express, hardly the best reviewed films of the year. Carlin had memorable roles in Dogma and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and I'm sure he would have received thunderous applause. Though I know it's on the bubble there, I think he should have been included.

I definately think it was. Not only did he have his on shows on tv, but he also did some film work to i.e. "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." I'm sure he was a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
