OK, so this question is right up my alley. One of my favorite book series of all time. Here is my initial thoughts of casting:
1. Roland - Although King says that the character was based on Clint Eastwood's "Man with no name" character, I think Clint is probably too old to play the Gunslinger. The actor shouldn't be too young either, as Roland has had the weight of the world on his shoulders for a long time now. A couple of suggestions: Clive Owen, Russell Crowe, or Daniel Day-Lewis
2. Eddie Dean: Looking for someone street-wise, tough talking yet vulnerable: Mark Walhberg would be perfect I think. Or Robert Downey Jr. - as he has the experience as a junkie to draw from.
3. Susannah Dean/Detta Walker: Tough, determined, proud - yet able to transform into the murderous Detta at a moments notice: Angela Bassett gets my vote
4. Jake - tough one, because he often seems much older than he really is. Haley Joel Osmont may be getting a bit old to play this part, so I'm going to have to go with Freddie Highmoreof Willy Wonka fame
5. Oy: probably an animatronic thing or a CG animal.

I always thought Clint Eastwood would be the perfect Roland. But that was many years ago. I believe that Clint is too old now. I think it would have to be an unknown actor.

Roland - Hugh Laurie. He is a terrific actor and has a ton of experience. He has the caliber to be a lead, is just about the right age for the end of "The Gunslinger" and if he did it in the American accent with just a hint of his British to emulate his "High speech" upbringing, it could work beautifully.Permalink | Report

I've always thought that Viggo Mortensen would make a good Roland, personally. Age would be about right, too. Not sure about the rest of the Ka-tet - I would hope for a nice mix of relatively unknown actors in those roles.
