Ti, a really poor construction worker that struggles to keep his son, Dicky, in private school, mistakes an orb he finds in a junkjard for a toy his son heavily requested from him, since all of the classmates had it. This object turns out to be an alien creature with regenerative powers that will end up teaching important lessons to both father and son, amidst a dramatic turn of events in which Dicky is confronted to the harsh realities of life.

I never would have known about this movie, Bugsy! Thanks for turning me on to it -- and for the cool trailer. Much appreciated
臥虎藏龍 (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). You can pick your choice from the Wikipedias list of Chinese films ;-) Look for ones that have won awards :-P

Kung Fu Hustle! I don't remember there being much if any profanity in it -- it has comical violence, but no real adult content.
It is a very funny movie, set in Hong Kong, and has an English translation. It also has a very happy (family happy) ending.

Dang, beat me to it. Good taste in movies, sir.
Kung Fu Hustle. Funny movie with Stephen Chow, China's "Jim Carey". Though there is violence, it is cartoon-ish. Also in the movie: good moral values. It is also 10 bucks right now, pretty good price.
Kung Fu Panda is funny and very family friendly. It's more of a children's film but even as an adult I found it to be very amusing and entertaining.
haha. That is not Chinese at all. I have sympathy for your ignorance.
Shaolin Soccer. A ex-soccer player reunites with his five brothers to teach them soccer with a kung fu twist, and compete in a soccer tournament with a one million dollar prize.
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" made by Ang Lee
Not sure how 'family friendly' these kung fu movies are going to be, especially with the fatal stabbings and kicks to the head.
CJ7 is Stephen Chow’s 2008 movie about a poor man, his son, and an alien. A heartwarming story about the effort the father puts towards giving his son a good life and especially a good education, even if it means that he has to starve. However their life change when the father finds a new “toy” for his son.
Mixed bag, but ultimately family friendly.
-edit- looks like I took too long to hit reply. Sorry for the dupe.

I particularly liked Saving Face. It was quite funny and kept both my husband and I laughing throughout. There are chunks in both English and Chinese with subtitles. However, there are some adult themes as the daughter is a lesbian but it isn't violent. Here's a review:

There is a nude lesbian scene in that movie. Movie = Win. Family-friendly? Fail.
Too bad you can't rate the comments. :))
Thumbs up.

I did take some time to consider this before posting... Yes there is a lesbian scene. However, it seemed very tastefully done. My husband and I are on the conservative side in our movie tastes preferring things that most people would consider harmless like romantic comedies. We both enjoyed this and I strongly recommended it to both my mother and my in-laws. So, family friendly would depend on the age of the audience. In this case it may be appropriate for in-laws but not young children.
Money not Enough 2. This film is a family film. So nice and touching stories. You should buy this for your mother in law.
CJ7 by Stephen Chow for family-friendly movie.
The Forbidden Kingdom definitely, it's based on a Chinese novel called Journey to the West!
Spirited Away, Kung Fu Panda and Mulan are good animated ones, too.

hmm..none of those animations are chinese...... wow
They are of Asian decent and are all family oriented. Thanks for being so helpful with your reply.
I'd say Eat Drink Man Woman (Taiwan) or The Last Emperor, if you mean adult family friendly. Both are excellent family drama for adult women.
Honestly, most Chinese language films I've seen are of the "tragic art" variety and all have intensely honest scenes/themes that make "family friendly" a tough match.

Eat Drink Man Woman is one of my favorite movies, too.
But it should have a disclaimer: DON'T WATCH IF YOU'RE HUNGRY! ;-)

by the way... another Taiwanese movie that - in my opinion - shows an accurate picture of family life in Taiwan is Yi Yi (2000) by Edward Yang. To many it may seem boring and long, but it's a real masterpiece.

I highly recommend any of the Karate Kid franchise movies.
The Karate Kid movies were great but not Chinese. Mr. Miyagi was from Okinawa, Japan.
Forbidden Kindom
Here are two very nice movies without any Kung Fu or violence. As far as I remember, they are absolutely family friendly. Apart from that, they are beautifully made, emotionally touching and deep in a way that is interesting to kids and adults alike.
The Road Home (我的父親母親) 1999
Very beautiful pictures of landscapes and rural life. The whole movie is a flashback of memories of the narrator who remembers the love story of his parents in the village.

Together (和你在一起) 2002
About a 13 year old violin prodigy whose father from simple background in the province would do anything to help his son achieve an education in classical music. He learns his lessons in music and life.
