Inglorious Basterds is one of the best movies to come out in the past year. Tarantino has done an amazing job creating well thought out and interesting characters. In addition to the great writing, the acting is superb. I fully expect Christoph Waltz's portrayal of Hans Landa to win him an Academy Award for Best Actor. Brad Pitt's Aldo Raine is a comical but also extremely serious character with deeply held beliefs and ideas. While comical, provocative and thoughtful the movie also includes its fair share of gore, which in some ways detracts from the more beautifully constructed dialogue and story line. For a 2:40 long movie it moves by at a brisk pace and at the end you'll be left wishing it was longer. I give Inglorious Basterds a 9/10, barely missing out on a perfect ten due to the extreme gruesomeness of some scenes.

I will definitely get it on Blu-Ray when it comes out, however i do feel it was pretty gruesome. The cutting of a swastika in to heads was filmed to make one squirm. Additionally some of the scenes where people die seem to be prolonged, sometimes twice as long as they need to be for the point to get across.

Actually some parts were cut out, I came across a copy of the screenplay that an actor friend of mine had and there are a few scenes that I saw that I didn't see in the movie.

I'm a film buff, love WWII movies, am Jewish...and find the premise of this movie ridiculous. I can't offer a review because I doubt I'll see Inglorious Basterds until it hits cable. I can't imagine paying full-price and encouraging Tarantino to go further off the deep end...

In Answer to andrew4423....: Perhaps "ridiculous" was not the right word (although I was actually quoting a film critic without citation). Yes, perhaps it could have happened. However, given the enormity and tragedy of what did happen (i.e. the Holocaust = several million other civilians and soldiers dead)the premise of this movie is, as the film critic (New Yorker?) said rather like an adolescent fantasy. However, the historical genre of "what-if" scenarios contained in World War II magazine, in contrast, are historically-arguable and well-researched and have some inner logic reflecting psychological maturity. Many academics are fascinated by historical "what-ifs" relating to Hitler, the Third Reich, Stalin, Kennedy, etc. Tarantino missed a great opportunity to make a great and powerful film along these lines; instead he made a great movie - and will probably garner some Oscar for himself or, more likely for one his actors.

This film, in my opinion is more of a satire rather than a serious look at history. The fact that tarantino is involved in it makes for serious thought about exactly what he was or is trying to achieve.
Apart from all that, I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable and well worth the money to see it.
Brad pitt is exceptional in his role and for this alone it is worth seeing.
