If you are looking for films about people whose lives are changed by travel to exotic and beautiful (and sometimes harsh) locations, I have several recommendations for you. Some are old, some are newer, and the genres of these films all over the map. Each of these, however, affected me strongly and left me with a similar sense of awe.
The Talented Mr. Ripley:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CfVgcSltjc
Under the Tuscan Sun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWEkGQPDkV0
Shirley Valentine (more of a middle-aged version of what you are looking for)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098319/
A Walk in the Clouds (I didn't care for this one because Keanu Reeves has always bugged me, but you might like it)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMnz9uCRqU0
Out of Africa (one of may all-time favorites):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF-lNumI2qk
The Painted Veil
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oevR8c35Qk
Barcelona
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnytcMClO38
My House in Umbria
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVcdo24gaiE&feature=PlayList&p=F6B4033D0EB5A3E2&playnext=1&index=4
P.S. I Love You

Finally, I have a couple of Foreign Film Recommendations as well:
Nowhere in Africa (this is a German film)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN3xdM2hAFs
Jean de Florette (there was a sequel to this one, called Manon of the Spring)
http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi279511321/
Hope you enjoy some of these!

Let's see: your requirements seem to be a movie set near the European side of the Mediterranean; English/American person displaced, escaping ratrace or humdrum life and rediscovering self in the more slowly-paced Mediterranean countryside. Cultural clashes. People or requirements from old life put the person and/or his/her future in jeopardy--adventure or crime element. As person discovers themselves, they also make a romantic connection. Gorgeous photography; golden light; vineyards/lavender/sunflowers. Music: blend of "Mediterranean" accordian/folkish music and romantic music of the 60's (Sinatra etc.).
Ok. I think I have a couple for you. They're a bit older but very watchable:
French Kiss, 1995. I couldn't find a trailer that shows all the above elements, but trust me, they're there:
http://www.reelzchannel.com/trailer-clips/23063/french-kiss-trailer
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5LbenmHXRFc
Another movie that came out the same year, 1995: A Walk in the Clouds, has the same blend of elements. This clip does not do justice do the gorgeous photography and music, but it's better than the Youtube trailer. There are many more clips on Youtube that show the photography, but they give the story away:

Thanks for this great collection. I've seen a number of them but there are some good ones here! I must say I liked the book Under The Tuscan Sun better than the movie, which departs pretty far from it.

The movie set in Italy it's called "Shadows in the Sun" (aka "Shadow Dancer"), not "Shadow in the Sun". You even got the trailers wrong, this is the correct trailer: http://en.dtrailer.com/movies/watch/the-shadow-dancer.
Nice try though.

Sorry bugsy,
Yes. I am talking about Shadows in the Sun, not Shadow in the Sun. Missed of the "s". As well, I didn't realize there were two movies and they were both very similar in the title. I just managed to get the video from YouTube, and it looked like the movie.
