This question was made highly controversial in the realm of Star Wars because there was a change made to the original version. In the original theatrical version, Han shot Greedo under the table before Greedo took a shot. But in the 1997 Special Edition Version, Greedo had his blaster pointing straight at Han while Han was secretly working to get his own blaster. In this newer version Greedo had shot first but missed, and in retaliation Han blasted and Killed Greedo.
This change created the controversial saying that "Han shot first", because they technically both shot first, depending on which version you're looking at.
-quote-
George Lucas explained the change by stating that he wanted to make clear to children that Han had "no choice" but to shoot Greedo. This justification was unsatisfactory to many long-time and adult fans of the series. The ire of some fans led to an online petition demanding that the changes be retracted. The primary objection to the revision is that it alters Han's initially morally ambiguous character, making his later transition from anti-hero to hero less meaningful. The plausibility of Greedo missing from such a short distance is also considered questionable, and criticized as being depicted in an awkwardly facile manner.

Going for the remake, greedo shot first. If he had died before the hole was made in the wall then you would have seen him fall over, but since the hole was made then he fell, we come to find out that he really sucks at aiming....

If they answer Han, the potential is high.
If they say, "What the hell is a Greedo?" then the potential is moderate.
If they say Greedo, I don't waste my time talking to them.
Shortcuts like this make it easier on a guy like me who has people lined up around the block for a chance to be my friend ;)

The whole arc of his character in the film is going from a self-involved criminal to a more open-minded, thoughtful hero. When we see him shoot Greedo in order to save his own skin, this action perfectly mirrors his decision at the finale to intentionally put himself IN HARMS WAY in order to help his friend Luke and the Rebellion.
Being afraid to make him a "bad guy" in the beginning means that he doesn't have the same dramatic journey of redemption later on in the film. It basically just makes him a jerk who eventually decides to be nicer (largely because he wants to hook up with Princess Leia), when really it's the story of an outlaw who finds his way back into the light.

Greedo or Han: Who shot first?
Suspect #1: Han Solo. Has been called a 'scoundrel' and a 'nerf-herder'. Known Associates: Chewbacca the Wookie.

Suspect #2: Greedo. Bounty Hunter. Works for Jabba the Hutt. Needs copious amounts of suntan lotion to protect that green skin on Tattooine.

WE KNOW THEY BOTH SHOT AT EACH OTHER. WE KNOW GREEDO IS DEAD. BUT: WHO SHOT FIRST? HERE IS WHERE WE DECIDE!
Please give me your detailed answer below. Best answer gets 5 Imperial credits.

Well by going for the ORIGINAL (and personally the best one) Han solo only did the shooting and greedo did the dying! Going for the remake, greedo shot first. If he had died before the hole was made in the wall then you would have seen him fall over, but since the hole was made then he fell, we come to find out that he really sucks at aiming....

The guy who played Vader in the OT is likely spinning in his grave now with Lucas' edition of Hayden to the Jedi Spirits scene at the end of RotJ.

I find this question is an excellent test of whether or not someone has friend potential. If they answer Han, the potential is high.
If they say, "What the hell is a Greedo?" then the potential is moderate.
If they say Greedo, I don't waste my time talking to them.

Yeah, agreed, Han obviously shot first, and altering this moment in the film actually hurts Lucas' attempts to establish Han's situation and personality.
