I think it's clearly a disappointment, despite having a few reasonably fun sequences. I couldn't find any interviews with Spielberg or Lucas directly discussing the backlash...and Harrison Ford seemed to have an overall positive experience making and then screening the film:

To me, the biggest issues are 2-fold:
- It's far far too jokey. The entire Indiana Jones series has gotten more and more wacky/silly with each passing entry. I thought "Last Crusade" was too jokey, turning Sala and Marcus Brody into walking punchlines, but this one pushes it even further with the gags and ludicrous asides. (Surviving a nuclear explosion in a fridge? Huh?)
- Integrating Indiana Jones movies with sci-fi, as opposed to fantasy rooted in world religions and mythology, just clashes. Really, really bad. I genuinely disliked the final half hour.

The actors felt (and looked) old. Plot was pretty good but wasn't completed. Bringing in Shia was a mistake. Special effects were very good except maybe the car chase. There were some traditional Indy funny moments, such as the "get out of the library" line but there was no real chemistry between Hrrison Ford and Shia.
It almost felt like the producers were trying to get this movie out for a long time and finally just wanted to push it out.

The man eating ants were particularly thrilling for her, though I was a bit grossed out. I'm sure my mother had similar thoughts when we went to see 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and all the bad guys flesh dissolves from their faces when they unleash the ark. Being fair, I have to say they did a good job, because they know what works on the 10 year-old crowd.

You can visit the Indiana Jones Official Site, where they've posted a link that will take you to an interview with Harrison Ford in Titan magazine. He shares his experiences what it was like revisiting his old role. There are also features on Karen Allen, who plays Marion Williams, the leading actress, and more.

And that's not where the problems end. Worst of all are the two major fatal flaws that make this movie UNWATCHABLE:
1. Harrison Ford is TOO OLD for this role. It was embarrassing to see him try to run and jump, and it looked as though the bad guys had to slow down and wait for him to make his escape.
2. If they're going to make it a major plot point that the treasure is a super magnet, then they had better decide once and for all if guns, swords, etc. can be used around it. Plot inconsistencies, ho!
I thought it then, and I thinks it now! Harrison Ford and the studio might as well have just shot two hours of film of them twisting their mustaches, smoking fat cigars, and propping their feet up on stuffed canvas bags with giant "$" on them.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
Lucaaaas! Damn you and Spielberg for your greedy ways! And damn us all for filling your pockets with cash!
AND WHAT ABOUT THE INSIDERS SPEAKING OUT?
I highly doubt they'll ever explain themselves sufficiently, since they won't ever cop to wanting a dump truck full of money.
But they're plenty defensive. Here's Shia LeBeouf's brush-off of how it's not his fault his vine swinging stunts were so mockable:
http://www.mtv.com/videos/movies/276338/the-viewer-has-changed.jhtml
And screenwriter David Koepp is defending himself quite a bit too, after taking lots of heat for the "nuke the fridge" scene (a term, btw, which has become cinematic slang for a movie series that has jumped beyond plausibility in any way). Koepp swears that nuking the fridge "wasn't even my idea."
But at least there's been an offer of appeasement:George Lucas has promised angry fans that Indiana Jones 5 (god help us!) will NOT star Mutt.

What part of those scenes were not nuking the fridge?
Let's not forget the whole premise is an archaeology professor who gets a bunch of hot women and goes on adventures. Has anyone ever met an archaeology professor?
Now I love Dr. Jones as much as the next guy but I believe this is a situation like kids who saw Star Wars Phantom Menace before the originals. It's a whole different thing when you are fond of the originals because it changes your perspective and you expect less from it.

1 Year Later: What are your thoughts on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
Who is responsible? Are there any interviews of the creators explaining themselves? Have any of the actors spoken out about it?

The sequel felt flat, contrived, and Karen Allen's botched Botox features kept detracting from the story line. The actors felt (and looked) old. Plot was pretty good but wasn't completed. There were some traditional Indy funny moments, such as the "get out of the library" line but there was no real chemistry between Hrrison Ford and Shia.

My daughter enjoyed Indiana Jones just as much as I did...as a kid. I think Indiana Jones is about the same quality as it's always been. It's just that the audience got older. Watching my daughter's face, however, I could tell she had the same tense moments and excited awe that I did at her age, so I think Harrison Ford managed to keep it all alive for 'The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'. The man eating ants were particularly thrilling for her, though I was a bit grossed out. I'm sure my mother had similar thoughts when we went to see 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and all the bad guys flesh dissolves from their faces when they unleash the ark. Embarrassing. Dreadful. Huge Mistake. Here's the thing - (SPOILER) it's not even the aliens that bother me most about this movie. Its unoriginal, tired plot is a direct and disturbing rip-off of other recent blockbuster movies (with my apologies to Tolkien) including "Lord of the Rings" and "National Treasure". Not to mention that the character of "Mutt" is a corny caricature, the forced 50s nostalgia is insultingly conspicuous, and the visual effects are appalling video game quality - especially when you see they even digitized a warehouse full of crates!

Not my favorite of the four but it is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Sure it is poorly written, unbelievable and at times just plain silly, but that pretty much sums up the whole series. In Raiders, the Arc microwaved the Nazis in an equally unrealistic scene. In Temple, a guy puts his hand into another guys chest, pulls out his still beating heart and does not even leave a bruise. In Last Crusade, Indy walks across an invisible stone bridge. What part of those scenes were not nuking the fridge?
