Most of us agree that knowledge is power. If it is true, what characteristic of knowledge gives it this power?

I myself agree that knowledge is power. Everything we see around us is a product of knowledge. If we had no knowledge then we are not sharing ideas here now. There are a lot of definitions about knowledge but it boils down to two things. Knowledge CREATES and DESTROYS things. That powerful!

One of the main characteristics that gives knowledge such power is the important factor of our ability to make choices, and all the great freedom that offers.

Knowledge gives us more opportunity in terms of knowing the world and all the choices available to us, empowering us to make the best choices and decisions we can make based on information and experience. While this can often complicate matters, I believe in most cases we benefit more from knowing the wide range of ideas and influences out there in order to find what is right for ourselves in any given situation.

Without the power of knowledge, we limit ourselves, our approach to life, our potential for success and our ability to contribute in significant ways to the people around us. Also, knowledge is a powerful guard against those who try to take advantage of us and against those who insist upon trying to apply their assumptions to us. Unfortunately, as we all realize sooner or later, knowledge can also be a powerful tool used against others to harm them or gain an advantage in nefarious ways. That's where the importance of free will and one's sense of personal responsibility come into play.

Combine the power of knowledge with the power of love, and there you have the wonderful ability to build a life worth living as well as the key to opening many doors along the way with every choice you make.

Scientia est potentia! :)

Knowledge alone only holds a small amount of power.
What one must do with that knowledge is key to its power.

Experience plays a big role with power. The knowledge of having been down a certain road and knowing where it leads. Without having experiences and the brain capacity to weigh the pros and cons, your knowledge about it is incomplete.

Knowledge without common sense is pretty useless too. When you see people that have not learned from their mistakes, it almost hurts to watch them.

Without knowing how to apply and learn from knowledge, it just remains words on a page.
If you don't know how to put the puzzle together, the pieces are just that. Pieces.

As to knowledge without common sense-I think the worst is people who can recite to you formulas, codes and word for word what is written in a book but have know practical application.

Knowledge is power in two ways. The power of me knowing something about you that you don't want anyone else to know. Secondly, knowledge is power in my application of it. Knowing how to work a competitive price into my business and get you to agree. Knowing how bad you need to close this deal when I don't need to close so fast is a way for me to break your price. Knowing of similar situations that you are unaware of. The property you are about to sell to me for what you believe to be a high price and I agree. But I know of a development coming through and sell it one month later for five times the price.
Hearing your girlfriends talk about you like daisies better than roses when I have an interest in you and send you a barrel of daises.
Knowing what your approach is to any situation is always beneficial. Otherwise people would never make a bad deal or have a bad relationship.

Things that are considered facts and truths give knowledge its power.

Especially if these facts are determined scientifically and separated by illusions.

How power is used can be positive or negative, but that's a different question.
