Hello and thank you for your question. The most common ways for someone to get tick bites is by outdoor activities in the warm weather such as camping, hiking, fishing and any activity where you are around trees or grass. Another common way to get tick bites is through your pets, as the little pests latch on to your pet and hitch a ride into your house and then onto you.
Some way to prevent tick bites on you and your pet are to make sure you pet is treated with flea and tick medication such as K9 Advantix. Also when you yourself are outside it is good to put some kind of tick repellent on such as OFF or natural repellent such as eucalyptus oil and basil . When outside where protective clothing as well.
If you are bitten by a tick it's best to get rid of it quickly as ticks can transmit Lyme disease which will be with you through the rest of your life once you contract it. The best way to remove the tick is to use tweezers or Sawyer Tick Pliers which are made specifically for removing a tick. If using tweezers make sure to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up without twisting it. If the head is still in the skin you will need to get it out. Once out apply an antibiotic ointment and then watch for symptoms of Lyme disease in the coming weeks: http://www.stopgerms.org/documents/tick.html?gclid=CO_k3-m0vacCFcnc4AodoBzJ_g
