I don't think you have your facts straight on this one... Pike won the NIU Tugs championship that year. In fact, the only two years Sigma Pi won tugs was in 1975 and in 1986. There is a listing of Tugs championship matches at "NIU Fraternity Alumni Tuggers" on Facebook. I was not at NIU in the early 1980's but know several tuggers from various fraternities who were. The NIU Football team was never any good at Tugs from a technical standpoint. They were big, strong and heavy - which before the team average weight limit was imposed, allowed them to field a competitive team. As for Sigma Pi winning in 1983, I have Sigma Pi alumni friends who can weigh in and confirm that never happened.
