Why was the lira given this name?
clue is it is the former monetary unit of Italy!

The name is from Latin as you would expect, and is derived from the world 'libra' which means 'scale', but was also the name for the roman pound.
Since the lira originally was worth one pound of silver, that was the name used for the currency

It got its name (at least from what I can find) to be לירה ישראלית which is hebrew for Israli Pound and pronounced Lira Yisraelit, so I guess they just slanged it to Lira.
