I think it's because there's something we feel when we're taking risk. Same on gambling. We risk some amount of money with a hope of getting back more.

Example, you like riding on roller coasters or other exciting and scary at the same time rides. You wanted to feel thrilled. You're actually taking your life at risk while riding those especially the dangerous ones, but you still ride anyway because - it's exciting.

Plus the factor that we could earn so much from it makes people so attached to gambling.

Anything anyone starts doing repeatively over time is an addiction. An addicition grows on your subconscious making you feel that you need to continue to do such action to get through your day. Some people have it as compulsive behaviors which is basically the same thing in different terminology

There's a certain rush to putting down 3 grand on a single hand, and the addiction comes in where it comes to "I'm just waiting for my next big hand, then I'll bet big!" Sometimes that big hand never comes, or someone else has a bigger hand, so they keep playing.

For those that do lotto, it's "what I'm going to do with my millions". It exists in the realm of possibilities, not realities.

a lot of this has to do with addictive personalities or people that have family history of addictions to other things.

Problem gambling (ludomania) is an urge to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop.
