Warning About Money Questions

I've done a tax season at a public accounting firm and I've also worked for a couple of years at a major tax prep firm.
The cost at the latter was "justified" because of all the training we received to start doing taxes plus the courses we had to take in the offseasons. Where I worked, there was no set rate--the cost was based on the forms used.
At the public accounting firm this and the complexity of the return figured into the return. There you'd have to figure the cost of having many CPAs or people in the process of becoming one.
Yes, you can save a lot of money by filing online (only paying for the state return). You could do it absolutely free if you felt confident enough to do your own returns & mailing in the forms.

It doesn't. There are many sites online that will do it for free if you make under a certain amount per year. They are pretty easy to use also. You just have to plug in your information and it does it for you. Most will charge a little extra to file the state tax, but even that is only about $10.
Because it costs so much when a misake is made and they know it. Not to mention most tax preparers give their customers a guarantee to cover the amount of any mistake plus interest and penalties. It's very important to get your taxes right. I do my own, but I also don't have very complicated tax returns.
