Who makes more money? A doctor earning $5,000 a day or a salesman who make $.01 cents a day, which doubles every day for 30 days?

Be careful when figuring this one out. It may suprise you. The salesman will make .01 on day 1, then .02 on day 2, then .04 on day 3 and so on.

It depends on whether the doctor is also only paid for one month. After one month, the salesman will have 10.7 million dollars and the doctor will have
$150,000.

However, if the salesman stops earning money after a month, and the doctor continues to earn money over a 30 year career, the doctor will end up with more(54.8 million)
Asker's Rating:
• I didn't clarify when the doctor would stop earning money so your answer was chosen as the best. Good job!!

A doctor earning $5000 a day would earn $150,000 over thirty days. I suppose we assume his earnings are after malpractice premiums are paid. I notice he gets paid seven days a week, and maybe he comes in Sunday, but I think I saw him on the golf course on Wednesday.

For the salesman, we could get a calculator and calculate two to the power of thirty. On his last day he will earn 2 to the twenty ninth, and when you add in the previous days it will be about 2 to the thirtieth power all together. Its more interesting to note that two to the thirtieth is two to the tenth power cubed, and two to the tenth is 1024, or slightly over 1000. Two to the thirtieth is slightly over 1000*1000*1000, or one billion pennies, or ten million dollars.

So the salesman makes more money in theory. In practice he probably paid $300 to get involved in something promising geometrically increasing commissions. I doubt he'll get anything.

Your explanation is right, but there is an addition error. The total should be about 10.7 million.

I would rather be the doctor. You can invest the $5000 right off the bat and you do not have to worry about being laid off.

The doctor will make $150,000 in the month, the salesman will make over $20,000,000 on the last five days of the month

The salesman makes 2.14 million dollars in the 30 days
