Wikipedia quotes the IMF ($47,440) the World Bank ($46,716) and the CIA World Factbook ($46,900) as the per capita GDP for 2008. The average of these three numbers is $47,019.

The US Census Bureau reported the median household income in the US for 2007 was $50,233. A figure is not yet available for 2008.

The comparable numbers for per capita GDP for Japan are $38,457 (IMF), $38,443 (World Bank), and $38,700 (CIA World Factbook). The average of the three is $38533, which is 18% lower than the comparable number for the US.

The CIA World Factbook 2008 estimate : USD 46900. IMF estimates 47440 USD, and the World Bank, 46716 USD.
