Coincidentally, Netapp (the #1 company) just had a layoff on the order of over 500 people. No one, it seems, is immune. Got a friend that works there and just lost some teammates.

I think it depends on your industry, too. If you're an animal trainer or a movie/TV script writer, no matter how many times Dow Chemical is rated well, it's going to be a mismatch for you. Even if you're something a bit more standard, you still have to look at the industry.
