Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the US. The first man to serve two terms in forty years. What would you have asked this determined man?
Here is his wikipedia page.

I would like to know if there were any security concerns and issues. With President Grant being a General in the Civil War, what measures were taken ,above the normal for the time, to assure a disgruntled Confederate soilder or angry southerner didn't have or carry out any assassination plan.

Excellent question, especially since the assassination of Lincoln. Perhaps James West and Artemus Gordon were there.
That's an easy one - after the assassination of Lincoln, the Presidency finally began to include a strong security detail (Lincoln had always scoffed at security despite the many threats on his life). There certainly were a number of known threats to Grant's life, and those threats were taken very seriously.

So... what does the "S" stand for?
Although the "S" didn't officially stand for anything, many people called him "Sam", because his initials were the same as Uncle Sam's.
I always liked what I knew of President Grant - if for no other reason, because he was an opinionated bastard who was never afraid to question authority when appropriate.
Here's what I would ask Mr. President Grant,
1. You opposed the Mexican-American War (which you fought in) as being "one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation". How would you gauge our current war against Iraq? More unjust? Less unjust? How would you compare the two conflicts?
2. Why did you really resign from the army in 1854? Was it really because you were caught intoxicated?
3. You were President during the economic Panic of 1863 - which bears many similarities to our modern economic troubles. You received mixed reviews for your actions to help fix the economy. So what would you advise our current president? What actions do regret taking/ not taking? What would you have done differently?
4. And of course - the question which I have for most civil war era Presidents: What do you think of our current President being a black man?
You know, Grant was far from perfect being as drunk and corrupt as he was. But one thing I always liked about him was that he always expressed remorse and regret about his mistakes. I think he had a lot of character, for all his faults. And I think he was a fine president in many ways.

"How did you and General Sherman plan your military strategies? How did you decide on implementing what has become known as 'the scorched earth policy'?"

I wonder what modern economists would say about the concept of using "scorched earth" during a Civil War? Does current military strategy favor it or not?
i would lean forward, look him directly in the eyes, and sincerely ask:
"dude, seriously, what's with the beard? that is soooo 1820's..."
"dude, seriously, what's with the beard? that is soooo 1820's..."
Actually beards were not worn in the 1820's. If you look at paintings and pictures from that time, you will see that Lincoln and Grant introduced a new style that lasted a long time.
Was he actually able to write in Latin with one hand and Ancient Greek with the other? Don't know where I read that fact.
