Return on equity (or ROE for short) is calculated as:

ROE = Net Profit / Average Shareholder Equity for Period in Question

The shareholder equity is imply the total assets minus total liabilities of the company, and the net profit is the total income minus total expenses of the company.

http://beginnersinvest.about.com/od/incomestatementanalysis/a/understanding-return-on-equity.htm provides a good primer on this, and explains why ROE is so important: "The return on equity figure takes into account the retained earnings from previous years, and tells investors how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Thus, it serves as a far better gauge of management's fiscal adeptness than the annual earnings per share. "

For things such as ROI, ROE, or any kind of banking / financial information - I always use the calculators online. These are going to allow you to place in your own numbers such as Net Profit After Taxes, Stock Holders equity, etc. Then you can get your calculations. Its a lot quicker than figuring it out yourself.

So you can try a few of these and see which ones you like the best. Each one contains different variants:

http://www.creditguru.com/G/roe.htm
http://www.ajdesigner.com/php_roe/return_on_equity.php
http://www.csgnetwork.com/rshecalc.html
http://www.mbaware.com/return-on-equity.html

Depending on what you feel more comfortable with you can use any of the above mentioned calculators.
