Has anyone ever applied for Food Stamp Benefits?
The food stamp program has been renamed to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and it's available for low-income families or families in a financial crisis due to layoffs and economic conditions that gives them a supplemental food income to purchase foods at the grocery store.
I used to be on food stamps back when I was a young teenaged mother and was working my way through college full-time while holding down a low paying full-time job (I made $860 per month, back in 1987), and paying for childcare and all those expenses. Food stamps were a great help to me back then, but I am glad I no longer need the assistance.
To help others, I made this page:
How to Apply for Food Stamp Assistance, so if you're in need of financial assistance to help pay for food, this page can help you find it.
Has anyone here every been on or applied for food stamp assistance? If so, was it a positive experience for you? Are you willing to share your story to help others? If so, tell us about it here.
Thanks!

Another reason I'm considering it is because my daughter and I eat well. Meaning as little crap as possible, lots of produce which here in MN is hella expensive. A box of Little Debbie snacks is a dollar. The ingredients for a great fruit salad could cost up to 10.
Great page and very helpful information. The ad on the radio just had a toll free number.
Thanks,
Christina

I have not applied for them but I dated girl who was on them. It kept her and her kids fed while she got back on her feet from a divorce. I would say it was positive.

I have been. When I divorced my abusive husband I had three children and would not have made it without them. They are a God send when you need them. Unfortunately there are people who cheat the system and cause those who really need them to pay.

I have also applied for, and received, food stamps. In California there is a program called General Relief giving a small cash benefit and even smaller food stamps to those who actually have no income. That program sure saved me in a time of my greatest trial several years ago. I believe the food stamp amount is something like $155, which can go awfully quick. Still, for a single person, that is enough for groceries for the month if one knows how to shop cheaply.
At this time I had no income and wasn't eligible for unemployment, though I was seeking work. The General Relief program was literally all I had. I get miffed when people make assumptions that those who receive government aid of one kind or another are a bunch of thieves.
