Adsense pays more than a penny per click. I depends on the ad that is clicked, some of them pay several dollars per click depending on how much the advertiser is willing to pay google. It changes too, I've made 2 cents on one click and 3 dollars on another. It's true that you do need good traffic to make 5 grand, but you can get good traffic without spending a lot of money. Just make a good page and have a lot of other people link to into it (link exchanges, blogs, etc), it will rank well in search engines and bring you traffic.
