Ordinary checking (no interest) is free at our credit union.
There is an interest bearing checking account type that requires a $500 minimum balance, pays interest on balance over $1K, and severely limits no-fee access to tellers for transaction processing. With the internet and ATMs, this isn't really much of an issue. This account type is also free, and is the type we use.
And a third, higher interest paying checking account type is also free, but requires a combined $10K balance in all non-retirement accounts. This one does not limit teller transactions.
I LOVE using a credit union.
Edited to correct a couple of details and add 3rd checking account type.
