Surprisingly I don't worry about paying our bills even though our income is low. Since we've paid off all our credit cards, we have enough to pay all our bills, buy food, etc. We might not have enough to go out to eat (and really since we're trying to get out of debt we wouldn't eat out anyway) but we have enough to make ends meet.

The moment I get a bill I write a check, for it and put it out in the mailbox. I am kind of old fashioned in the sense that I like to see my money actually leave my account rather than having automatic bill pay. Since we've planned ahead for the bills we always have the money in the account to cover the bills.

I guess I am lucky that I don't have to have priorities on which bills to pay and which ones not to. If I were ever in the situation where I had to choose which bills to pay I would definitely not put money in my son's savings account that month. I wouldn't donate to charities either. We're ahead on rent, utilities and are phone bill so if I couldn't pay it one month it would be totally fine. If I had to choose one to skip it would be the phone bill though.

We have a list of all the bills that are due in a month. So my technique to paying bills is simply having a budget. We know how much we need to pay the bills so we plan for it.

• Have you set up automatic bill paying? This is another pain reducing technique.
