Did JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs profit in the 2008 CDS market as the financial system destabilized?

Credit-Default swaps on Morgan Stanley soared 194 basis points to 458 and Goldman Sachs jumped 122 basis points to 321 according to CMA Datavision prices.

Do the big banks profit handsomely during a crisis?

parts of their business did yes...but the more important take away is that they both lost money in their credit business
