Christmas gifts on a budget?

This year has not been good to me financially but I would still like to give some X-mas presents to family and friends.

Do you have any ideas of what could be a good gift, that doesn't cost a lot?
Were you ever in a similar situation?

First think about your talents and use those to make gifts. The gifts would not only be much more inexpensive, but many recipients would feel "honored" to get something handmade or homemade.

Are you a seamstress or at least a basic one? Or do you knit or crochet? Or paint? Or make ceramics? There are so many gifts that can be made using those crafts. The choice is endless.

Are you a good cook or baker? That, too, offers all kinds of ideas. Get inexpensive containers at the dollar store and fill them with your specialties.

Can you make handmade greeting cards or decorate stationery? Anyone who writes letters would love a gift such as this.

You could also give an IOU and promise an hour of your time to walk their dogs, or watch the children, or clean the house, or take a senior citizen to the doctor, or buy their groceries, etc. etc.

If you just sit down and think about all this, you should be able to come up with a variety of ideas that you can easily put into gifts, and you will certainly save a LOT of money.

Great answer @jackiewriter!
You can also get creative in making certificate cards that offer your services or time.

I would much rather have a friend or family member give me a service than some scented soap. Isn't that what the season is all about?

I'm sure you'll have a great holiday Marina... even if you don't have funds this year that you're used to.
(I too am in the same boat)

Hi :)
I'm in a similar situation: not enough money to buy super gifts for the family and other related.

So, here's my solution: christmas gift baskets.

For instance, I would use a shoe box, wrap it with a christmas related paper, add some silk or crepe paper, and add a few spa related products such as a soap, a body cream, bath salts, etc. You can find such things for less than $2. Total: $10

Another idea would be to gather some chocolate products and put them into a small basket along with a big red ribbon.

Or another one would be some bottles of beer in a nicely decorated box.

There are dozens of different ideas for low budget Christmas gifts - in addition, most of those gifts are highly appreciated as people get more than "one" gift and can make choice whether they prefer one more than another item into the basket.

I think you added a lot of excellent inexpensive ideas, and if readers would just take a clue from us and either use some of our ideas or else put their brains to use to see what their particular talents are, I think they would be happily surprised at what they could come up with.

That would save them so much money at Christmastime and not add to their debt. So Christmas could be a truly happy holiday.

Hi, Mike

You have a lot of good ideas, and I agree there are many ways to make extra money as long as we are careful to avoid any scams that are out there.

I am brand new at Mahalo but am enjoying it and am slowly making some money with just doing the Answers. The other things (How-To's and Pages, etc.) seem way too complicated to me!!!

And that is even when I am doing other online article writing for several websites!! It took me awhile to find out that there are such ways to make money writing articles, travel pieces, etc., and it is right up my alley and something that I am doing more and more. It's nice when one gets paid!!!

Thanks Randy, I really appreciate it... I am trying... I love to help people succeed so it is my pleasure doing this for all you guys... I help when I can so if you need anything to help you get started managing the pages I would be more then happy to help...

To get started simple remember this www.mahalo.com/keyword of pages you like.

once you find a page u want to manage click claim page... sometimes there is info already added so you wont have to do much to get started sometimes you have to add your own content.,.. Either way it is not as hard as you might think, it is a simple as hitting the claim button, you just have to know what is viral and what will make you money. Im claiming 13 pages so far, im not making a astranomical amount of money but everything takes time. I hope you do great on mahalo... Good Luck and God Speed.

Mike !

I'm in a similar situation right now and my plan is to make my presents this year.

I've been skint for the last three Christmases and ended up bying crap presents at the last minute because I'd managed to scrape a little bit of money together but still couldn't afford to buy decent presents.

I've been looking online and found some great ideas that are so easy to make it's untrue!

The first thing I'm going to do is make some of these little boxes:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2411/2214886527_f428ec5711.jpg

Here's the blog that explains how to make them - it's so easy, there's no glue involved, just lots of folding, a bit of cutting and some tucking-in ;)

http://lifeaslou.blogsome.com/2008/01/30/magic-boxes-a-life-as-lou-online-class/

After that, I'll probably make some friendship bracelets for the women in my family and my little sister (maybe my little cousins as well - they're boys, but going through a dolls-and-pink phase, lol).

These are really easy to do, here's a great tutorial video:

The next is going to be my biggest project, I think - it involves French Knitting, which is insanely easy (I used to do it when I was four years old), with any material you like, really.

This blog (same one as the friendship bracelets) goes through the entire process, step-by-step, and shows you how to make bags and baskets REALLY easily!

Here's one of the finished products

The final one that I MIGHT do (if I have the patience) is this:

The finished product looks lovely and I really want to make some of these if I have the time...

I hope this helps ;) Good luck!

A lot of good stuff has been covered, so I don't have a ton of ideas, but I'll let you in on my favorites.

Whenever I have a secret santa type thing to do, where the limit is low ($10) I make the person a "movie night" basket. If you know them well and know what they like, burn a movie (or movies) from your computer, or get one of their favorite movies from a discount store (which can get as low as $1). If you don't know them well enough to give them burned movies or to guess and buy a cheap movie, go to your local rental store and get a gift certificate in the amount to cover 1 new release movie and the tax for 1 night. Make sure you go somewhere they either have an account or where they won't need to pay for an account.
You need a basket to put everything in. I found one like this at my local dollar store. You could also go to a local movie theater and try and get a large empty popcorn bucket or bag from them. If those don't work, a gift bag or plastic bowl will do just fine.
Then head to the dollarstore, grocery store, or your cupboard at home. With the rest of the $10, fill the bucket with other things they might want for a movie night. I always include 2 of anything that can't be shared, assuming there will be two people. Some idea: Microwave popcorn(most important, include 2 or 3 packs if you can), Sodas, beers or wine, packet of kleenex if it's a sad movie, gum, candies, chocolate, cups, chips... anything you think they will like. If you can get a couple small popcorn bags from the theater, include those as well. I always use a few packs of popcorn and fill the rest with candy and chocolate. If you go to the dollar store you can usually find some good stuff for just a couple dollars. The great thing about this is that you can cater to any budget by buying more expensive candies or more movies, etc. lots more ideas here.

Another idea, works well if you know the person well too (as you don't want any consequences) is to get a small USB thumb drive (they're now under $10 for 2gb). Fill it with music, movies, or games they'd like from your computer. I always give older children (10 and up) a copy of my SNES emulator and Roms... Every kid loves video games.. now you can give 900 video games on a stick that will fit in your pocket! If the person isn't too technically inclined as to play a movie or music off their computer, you might want to try burning them CDs instead. A good media library can give a person 100's of hours of entertainment, and if they don't like your choices they can still use the USB drive.

The better you know the person, the easier it is. If you know a knitter, give them various yarns, buttons, and knitting needles. A kid could get a basket of toy vehicles or barbie clothes.

If the person you know if a crafter, try getting them some cross stitch or needlework kits. I'm one of those people that needs something to do with my hands, so I'll just sit and cross stitch will I watch tv. Paint by numbers, rug hookings kits, or puzzle books are also a good idea. Kids might like a good coloring book with a stack of fresh pencil crayons, crayons, markers, glitter, glue, etc.. all of which can be bought at the dollar store.

Magazine subscriptions are often quite cheap for a year (under $20) and my mom always gets me a newspaper subscription from my hometown.

One last one, for JUST the right person, is a gift of a tattoo or piercing - A gift I'd personally love to get. The reason some people don't have more is because of the cost.. A tattoo/peircing is not a necessity at all - It's something you only buy if you have cash and I know plenty of people that have held off because they just don't have the $20 of free cash to blow on an eyebrow piercing (or whatever). I've been waiting ages for several peices of work I've wanted just because I'm in school and might need that money later. A friend has a 1/2 finished sleeve because she's out of work. Again, randomly giving your mom a a nose piercing is probably not a good idea - but you'll know the kind of person that would take this as a gift. I've bought 3 of my friend's tattoos as gifts for birthdays (and went with her to get them), and I've received a navel piercing as a gift from my dad that I begged for when I was 14. If the person has been saving for a $400 dollar sleeve, clearly your not going to buy the whole thing, but if you give them $20 towards it (and mention the idea to others as well) they will be ecstatic. Trust me on that one - only for the right person of course!

Good luck!
