Why would a company not choose the Simpson's or a celebrity family that already exists?
I suppose they would want to sponsor a company if it would get them publicity. This is similar to Chris and Luke when Chris Barrett and Luke McCabe back in 2001 when they sponsored First USA in college. This is a very similar thought process.

Chris Barrett and Luke McCabe emerge from the surf, studded with the logos of a credit card company, and begin to work their way across the beach toward a coterie of publicists and a photographer there to capture the moment.
After a year of sponsoring First USA, they did not renew the corporate sponsorship with these students for some reason. Not saying it was not worth it for the company, but companies have more impressive ways to market a product than through a family.

Once you read the article it is not as crazy as it sounds the first time you hear about it. It would be an interesting study subject.
I guess they have it very well planned.
Edited to add that we've seen very weird stuff lately. And it is not like the Rent-a-Relative thing (http://www.rentarelative.net/) Don't even bother to look for rent-a-friend because it gets really wacky.
