Are central banks essential for economic function?

Central banks are becoming more important for large economies. Are there alternatives to have strong centralized banks?

probably not...it connects the strength of a country's economy to it's banking system...otherwise the consumer would be at far greater risk when it used a bank and there would be a far more fractured currency market making consumption a hassle
