Yes, Bank of America does have monthly service fees and overdraft fees. Their system for charging these is a little complicated, but all the info is on their website for fee information:

http://feesandprocesses.bankofamerica.com/index.aspx?bhcp=1#/introsection/introvideo/

I have a student account with Bank of America. I don't have to maintain a minimum balance, which I think is $1,000 with a regular checking account or else you're hit with a penalty.

I found this list of fees from http://www.foreignborn.com/self-help/banking/5-acct_features.htm#fees about questions you should ask when considering monthly fees.

Fees

* Will you pay a flat monthly fee?
* Will you pay a fee if the balance in your bank account drops below a specified amount?
* Is there a charge for each deposit and withdrawal you make?
* If you can use ATMs to make deposits and withdrawals on your bank account, is there a charge for this service? Does it matter whether the transaction takes place at an ATM owned by the bank?
* If you have a checking account or a money market account, how much will ordering checks cost? Will you be charged for each check you write?
* Are fees reduced if you have other accounts at the bank?
* Are fees reduced or waived if you agree to directly deposit your paycheck or government payments, like a social security check?
* What is the fee if you request the bank to stop payment on a check you have written?
* Is there a charge for asking how much money you have in your bank account (a balance inquiry)?
* Does the bank charge a fee for closing a bank account soon after it is opened? If it does, when will the fee be imposed?
* What is the charge for writing a check that bounces (a check returned for insufficient funds)? And what happens if you deposit a check written by another person, and it bounces? Are you charged a fee?

The fees for Bank of America's checking accounts will vary depending on the state and if you have a standard account or an online account. For more information, visit their Web site. Under Products & Services, choose Checking. When choosing California, you are taken to a page that details online checking accounts. For fees for standard checking accounts, click on "Personal Schedule of Fees". (The page for your state might look different). In California, there are monthly fees for most accounts except the CampusEdge Checking Account, but you can usually avoid the fees, for example by making deposits or keeping a certain minimum balance. There are also various other account fees, such as fees for check copies or ATM statements.

There are fees involved, yes.
Get a GREEN DOT debit card and pay just a flat fee.
Paper checks are obsolete.
