A strange as it may sound, I presume it's because it's the same machine/setup that is used in regular locations.

The thought is pretty scary although I guess there could be a seeing impaired individual in the back left seat of a car that could still use a drive-thru ATM even if they are not driving.

The folks over at WiseGeek.com have a good explanation. Basically, there are multiple reasons for Braille on drive-up ATMs.

One: Privacy. Drive-up ATMs are not used only by drivers. Blind people are perfectly capable of using these ATMs as passengers. The problem is that, if the machine did not have Braille keypads, there would have to be audio support. In other words, the ATM would have to "talk" to the blind customer, which would broadcast account information all over the immediate area.

Two: Federal laws. Banks, just like many other public businesses, are required by law to make accommodations for people with disabilities. The Braille keypad is one thing that ATM manufacturers can do to meet those requirements.

I know it's mostly due to laws, however, I like to think it could work well for the multi-tasker as well. You drive up, start fumbling through your purse or wallet and read the braille at the same time. It's a timesaver really!
