There are several benefits to joining a guild in World of Warcraft. First of all, if the guild is large enough, it means you will always have a pool of people to play with online.
Second, a guild can watch your back and help you move up in the game especially for your lower level characters. Guild members tend to look out for each other, and can loan you money for a mount or give you old stuff that they don't need anymore but would buff you up.
Third, there can be a real social aspect to joining a guild. A guild can be people with similar "real life" interests to you, but even if not, there's a shared experience there that some find very rewarding.
