There are several benefits to joining a guild in World of Warcraft. First of all, if the guild is large enough, it means you will always have a pool of people to play with online.
Second, a guild can watch your back and help you move up in the game especially for your lower level characters. Guild members tend to look out for each other, and can loan you money for a mount or give you old stuff that they don't need anymore but would buff you up.
Third, there can be a real social aspect to joining a guild. A guild can be people with similar "real life" interests to you, but even if not, there's a shared experience there that some find very rewarding. Drinking and chatting with friends in WOW can be as satisfying as drinking and chatting with friends at a bar.
There can be drawbacks, however. Some guilds are very demanding of your time, and if you do not play enough, they may kick you out. There's also "guild drama" which can be problematic. But overall, guilds can be a lot of fun.
World of Warcraft's official site has some good info on joining guilds. Also,
The Guild online TV show is a great, funny look at a fictitious WOW guild, albeit a dysfunctional one.
