There is no set number of levels for it to be defined as ganking, but if they are at least 15 levels below you, this is the point where they pretty much will not be able to beat you no matter what. I don't really think it was considered ganking because you didn't just kill them for the fun of it, you had a dilemma.

Would they have really hurt you if you left them alone?

I don't think what you did was ganking. At that level, the fight would have been more about class and skill than the actual level number. Depending on what class you each are and how good of a player the other person is, they probably could still have beaten you at that level difference.

How many levels below you does another character have to be in order for killing him/her to be considered ganking? (in WoW, or other MMO)
I offed someone who was a few levels below me, otherwise I would have had to turn my back on him/her while going into a care. The person came back with several friends, got me back, and proceeded to corpse-camp the whole evening. It didn't bother me too much, I had had other things to do. But I'm just wondering if what I did was really ganking. I was about 44, he/she was (I think) about 38.

If they conned green to you, then that may have been why they felt wronged. You may have had legitmate reasons, but you didn't tell them that. =p They might've been understanding if you had talked to them. As far as they knew, someone with a higher level was being a bully. Would they have really hurt you if you left them alone?

Actually, in WoW you can't talk to someone from the other side.

My rule of thumb is to not kill anyone that is grey to me. Battlegrounds are divided into 10-level groups (e.g. 40-49) with a lvl 40 being grey to a 49, so if the person is still green then they are fair game. Especially in the mid levels, 20-50, where gear isn't that important. At higher levels this gap needs to shorten. When you are 80 and start raiding and getting epic gear, it puts a leveling 70 in greens at an even bigger disadvantage. I don't think what you did was ganking. At that level, the fight would have been more about class and skill than the actual level number. Depending on what class you each are and how good of a player the other person is, they probably could still have beaten you at that level difference.
