"Mine That Bird" won the Kentucky Derby. Where do they come up with those names?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Mine That Bird from the horse's parents' names Mining My Own and Birdstone

Two or more thoroughbreds cannot have the same name. There can be more than one person named Jack Smith, but there can be only one registered thoroughbred named Secretariat (or whatever). This is mostly to keep the records as straight and simple as possible.

So, typically, when a horse is registered, the owner or trainer will create a combination of the parents' names. This makes it easy for them to come up with a unique name...but at the same time, it's also a handy way to track the horse's lineage. If you see a horse named "_______ Slew," you know it's probably a descendant of Seattle Slew. Same for a horse named "Seattle _______."

And that's how you get such weird, messed-up names when you look at the racing forms at your local track.
