"Mine That Bird" won the Kentucky Derby. Where do they come up with those names?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

M$So, typically, when a horse is registered, the owner or trainer will create a combination of the parents' names. This makes it easy for them to come up with a unique name...but at the same time, it's also a handy way to track the horse's lineage. If you see a horse named "_______ Slew," you know it's probably a descendant of Seattle Slew. Same for a horse named "Seattle _______."
And that's how you get such weird, messed-up names when you look at the racing forms at your local track.
I used to work for a thoroughbred trainer.
