The earthquake happened in Sichuan province. This province is probably best known in the US for the "schezuan" style Chinese food (spicy). More than 80,000 people were killed in the earthquake and countless others were hurt. Many people lost their entire families. One thing this earthquake exposed was that much of the infrastructure (e.g. buildings, etc.) was poorly built. What this could mean is that many people were skimming money along the way during the constructuion of these buildings.

You could call your local public library and ask a reference librarian for assistance, if they're really into their job, they'll be eager to help you find odd tidbits of "human oriented" news related to the quake. There may even be someone who speaks and/or reads the language who might be able to find you some catchy articles available through Chinese news.
