I think a better question is will Iran use nuclear weapons when they obtain them. We were unable to keep nuclear weapons out of Pakistan (maybe purposely to give some counterweight to India in the region), I have my doubts about our ability to keep them out of Iran as well.

Whatever their current capability, if and when they acquire them, hopefully they'll abide by international treaties on nuclear arms, lest their nations or others victimized by nukes suffer as depicted in this video:

Given that the example of the second Iraq-US war clearly indicates that the USA is willing to attack those who do not have a credible deterrent.
While at the same time the USA's behaviour toward North Korea indicates that if a nation has a (potentially) credible deterrent, the USA will not risk an attack.

I would suggest that Iran would like to have a credible nuclear deterrent as soon as they can, due to the ceaseless rhetorical aggression and sabre-rattling that the USA has engaged in over the last twenty years.
I believe that Iran would use the capability as a deterrent to aggression from the nuclear equipped USA and regional neighbours such as India, Israel, Pakistan & Russia.
