Met with new client, post cancer looking to strengthen upper body and endurance, let me know any experience you have with this situation.

Your question makes me think that you are a personal trainer, perhaps from a gym.
I don't know if you client would be open to it, but the gentle exercises of qigong and tai chi would be of great benefit. These exercises help strengthen the whole body, as well as improve the energy of the practicioners.
Three of the principal aims of these practices:
1. to develop healthy diaphragmatic breathing
2. to develop a balanced sense of movement from the waist
3. to develop improved body awareness, including better circulation of blood
and lymph
By improving the breathing, you help improve the movement of lymph, which helps remove toxins in the body and you also improve the utilization of oxygen in your lungs.
By learning how to move from the waist, you develop a lower, more stable means of moving your body.
Just developing the upper body is not going to help increase the endurance. In Chinese medicine, it is believed that developing strength from the center of the body that is the secret to long life. This center is called the lower dantien.
DVD's of simple qigong exercises are available through Ken Cohen, who is out of Colorado. His instruction is very clear. I highly recommend him.
